And indeed, through his sin, these souls, too, were flawed, as mentioned above, and there remained in them no illumination except the measure of illumination that had been in the aspects of the last Malchuyot of the souls before he sinned. Thus, these Ketarim that remained in him have no illumination but the measure of the illumination of Malchut that was there at first, before the sin. Therefore it is called the Nefesh of Adam, since Malchut is called Nefesh — understand this. And it follows that all the Ketarim remained in him, even the last Keter of them all, which is the Keter of the Sefira of Malchut in the Nukva of Assiya.

1The Ketarim that remained in him have no illumination but the measure of the illumination of the Malchuyot that was there at first, before the sin: That is, the light of Nefesh, as above. For when there is nothing in the Partzuf but the vessel of Keter, only the light of Nefesh clothes in it, and that is by reason of the inverse relation there is between the vessels and the lights, as written above. And it follows that, besides the fact that every Partzuf lacks the discernments of the nine lower Sefirot of the vessels and the nine first Sefirot of the lights, as above, even in the Sefirot of the Ketarim that remained in him the nine first ones of the lights are missing there, namely Ruach, Neshama, Haya and Yechida in each Keter. For before he sinned there was the light of Yechida in each and every Keter of the ten Sefirot in every Partzuf, since when the Partzuf is at its wholeness, the light of Yechida is found clothed in the vessel of Keter, as above in the Inner Observation (page, the passage beginning “And so”); study it there well. But now that the nine lower ones in each Sefira are missing, only the light of Nefesh alone is found clothed in the Keter. Thus even in the Keter, in which light remained, the nine first ones of the lights are missing, that is, from Nefesh up to Yechida that were there before this. And it follows that the nine lower ones of the vessels and the nine first ones of the lights are missing in general, and besides this, the nine first ones of the lights are also missing in each and every Keter of the hundred Ketarim that remained in him, and all these were lost because of his sin with the Tree of Knowledge. And the reason for this will be explained below.
